Winners told in flag essay contest

American Legion Post #11 named local winners in the American Legion of Iowa’s flag essay contest at Greene County Middle School. Fifth grade students were asked to write an essay on “What the Flag Means to Me”.

Flag essay chair Barb Labate and Post 11 commander Fred Long visited with fifth grade social studies classes prior to their writing. Social studies teacher Kim Braun incorporated the contest in her classes.

The purpose of the essay contest is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation for the United States flag on the part of elementary students. “After reading 94 essays, it is easy to detect that the students have definitely achieved more knowledge on their country’s flag and a deeper appreciation of what it represents,” Labate said.

First place winner was Brynlee Winkelman (pictured above with Barb Labate). She won $30 and will be invited to read her essay at the Memorial Day program at the Jefferson cemetery in May. Second place winner and recipient of $20 was Anna Eischeid, and third place winner and recipient of $10 was Aidan Deal.
